The Harlem Yacht Club and The Corinthians invite you to a Mariners’ Weather Seminar.

Saturday February 23rd, 2008 at 9:30 a.m.

In this 3 Hour Weather Seminar you will learn weather theory and practice from a
USCG Master Mariner who also has a pilot’s license. He will cover:

  • Why you need to be able to make your own predictions
  • How the sun, seasons, continents, Coriolis, (and butterflies) influence weather
  • The locations of the principal weather bands, zones, and prevailing winds
  • How high altitude winds influence surface weather (and vice versa!)
  • How to obtain and interpret current and predicted weather information – text, graphical, and voice
  • Definitions of weather terminology, acronyms, and jargon
  • How to interpret a 500Mb weather map - the jet stream and other currents aloft
  • Practical on-board forecasting for coastal cruising
  • Brief comments re: weather forecasts for offshore cruising

The seminar will be taught by Capt. Jonathan Taylor, a USCG licensed 100 ton Master and ASA certified instructor who teaches locally and in the Caribbean. Based on his experience as instructor, professional captain, cruiser, and former pilot, Jon knows first-hand that your chances of guessing Mother Nature's next move will improve greatly from learning the material in this course!

This same seminar is offered elsewhere at $95 but will cost you only $25 per person.

RSVP to Diane at 718 885-3078 or at office@hyc.org to reserve your place. Payment by check to HYC in advance or at the door.

The bar and restaurant will be open for lunch.

Do come and bring your friends. You are certain to expand your weather savvy.
